Rotational pulley 3d extension

Rotational pulley 3D extension is an integrated trunk exercise in which you combine a diagonal rotation movement with extension of the spine against cable resistance. The movement proceeds in multiple planes simultaneously (transverse, frontal and sagittal), creating a three-dimensional movement pattern.

The exercise requires controlled cooperation between the trunk, hips and shoulder girdle. Due to the combination of rotation and extension, this exercise fits well with sports movements such as throwing, hitting and pushing off where power is transferred from the hips through the torso.

Purpose of the exercise

Aims to improve rotational strength, trunk coordination and controlled extension under resistance. Strengthens oblique abdominal muscles, back extensors and hip stabilisers. Supports force transfer between lower and upper body in functional, multidirectional movements.

Supplies

  • Cable station/pulley

  • Handle

  • Flat surface

Starting position

  1. Adjust pulley to low or medium position

  2. Stand sideways relative to the cable station

  3. Hold the handle with both hands

  4. Feet shoulder-width apart

  5. Knees slightly bent

  6. Core tightened

  7. Pelvis neutral

Implementation

  1. Start with light trunk rotation towards the cable station

  2. Pull the cable diagonally upwards and backwards

  3. Combine rotation with slight extension of the torso

  4. Allow hips to move in a controlled way

  5. Torso muscles actively tighten in end position

  6. Return slowly and in a controlled manner

  7. Maintains tension on cable throughout movement

  8. Change of sides after completion

Points of interest

✓ Move from the hip and torso, not just the arms
✓ Keep core continuously tightened
✓ Check the extension in the lower back
✓ Knees stable and slightly bent
✓ Exhale during vigorous phase

✗ Excessive hollowing of the lower back
✗ Only pulling with the arms
✗ Using too heavy a weight
✗ Uncontrolled trunk rotation
✗ Ignoring pain in back or shoulder

When this exercise?

Rotational pulley 3D extension is used to improve multidirectional trunk control and power transfer, especially in athletes who need to transfer power in rotational and extension movements. The exercise is suitable within advanced strength and performance programmes.

Within rehabilitation, this exercise can be used when controlled rotation and extension are loadable again and sufficient basic stability is present. The adjustable resistance makes it easy to dose the load, but technique remains essential. Application, load and progression should always take place in consultation with a physiotherapist or other qualified professional, to ensure that the exercise is safe and tailored to individual load capacity, complaints and recovery status.
