End extension knee standing dynaband

The end extension knee standing with dynaband (also called Terminal Knee Extension - TKE) is an exercise in which you actively move from slight knee flexion to full knee extension against resistance from an elastic band. The dynaband is placed behind the knee and pulls the lower leg slightly forward, requiring the quadriceps to actively tighten to fully extend the knee.

This exercise specifically targets the last degrees of knee extension, an important part of walking, stair climbing and sports movements. Its controlled execution makes it a widely used exercise within knee rehabilitation.

Purpose of the exercise

Focuses on activating and strengthening the quadriceps, with emphasis on endrange extension. Improves knee control, stability and gait. Supports recovery from knee problems and after knee injuries or surgeries.

Supplies

  • Dynaband/elastic

  • Fixed anchor point at knee height

  • Flat surface

Starting position

  1. Attach the dynaband to a fixed point

  2. Place the elastic behind the hollow of the knee

  3. Stand with the working leg slightly bent

  4. Other leg stable next to or slightly behind the working leg

  5. Core slightly tightened

  6. Hull upright

Implementation

  1. Start with slight knee flexion

  2. Actively extend the knee against resistance

  3. Deliberately tighten the quadriceps

  4. Bring the knee into full extension

  5. Briefly hold tension in final position

  6. Return to slight flexion in a controlled manner

  7. Maintain control throughout movement

Points of interest

✓ Focus on full but controlled extension
✓ Keep pelvis stable
✓ Core slightly tightened
✓ Move in a controlled manner without momentum
✓ Deliberately tighten quadriceps in end position

✗ Overstretching the knee
✗ Move hip backwards
✗ Using too heavy resistance
✗ Uncontrolled returns
✗ Ignoring pain in knee

When this exercise?

The end extension knee standing with dynaband is widely used within rehabilitation for knee complaints, for example after anterior cruciate ligament injury, meniscus problems or patellofemoral complaints. The exercise helps restore active knee extension and quadriceps control.

In addition, this exercise can be used preventively to optimise knee control and gait. Due to the well-dosed resistance, the exercise is suitable in early to middle stages of recovery. Application, loading and progression should always take place in consultation with a physiotherapist or other qualified professional to ensure that the exercise is safe and tailored to individual load capacity, symptoms and recovery status.
