Calf raise extension elastic in seat

The seated calf raise with elastic band is an effective exercise to strengthen your calf muscles and improve ankle mobility. This exercise is particularly suitable in the early phase of your rehabilitation because you can dose the resistance yourself and have full control over the movement. The seated position allows you to perform the exercise safely without putting strain on your leg. The calf raise activates both deep and superficial calf muscles, improves blood circulation and helps reduce swelling. This exercise forms an important basis for restoring your gait and preparing for more taxing exercises.

Purpose of the exercise

Strength exercise for the calf muscles (gastrocnemius and soleus) and activate the pumping muscle/lymph system.

Supplies

  • Resistance band/elastic
  • Mat or soft surface

Starting position

  1. Sit upright on the floor with your legs stretched out in front of you
  2. Place the elastic under your forefoot/front feet
  3. Hold both ends of the elastic in your hands
  4. Create tension on the elastic by pulling your hands towards you
  5. Keep your back straight and shoulders relaxed

Implementation

  1. Push your front foot against the elastic band (stretch your ankle)
  2. Bring your toes towards you
  3. Hold this end position for 2 seconds
  4. Allow controlled return to starting position
  5. Repeat 15 times, 3 sets

Points of interest

  • ✓ Move calmly and in a controlled manner
  • ✓ Keep your knee extended
  • ✓ Keep your back straight (don't jerk around)
  • ✓ Breathe through during exercise
  • ✗ Avoid jerky movements
  • ✗ Don't pull with your whole body, only the ankle moves

Progression

  • Start: Both feet at the same time, light resistance
  • Advanced: one foot at a time
  • Heavier: thicker elastic or more tension
  • Additional challenge: Alternate between pulling foot towards you (dorsal flexion)

When this exercise?

This exercise is suitable to activate shortly after knee or ankle surgery and helps restore calf strength and reduce swelling in affected area.
