Deltoid tendinopathy
A deltoid tendinopathy occurs due to reduction in quality of tendon tissue. It can be caused by over- or underuse and occurs in both younger people and the elderly. A tendinopathy is often accompanied by stiffness and pain in the shoulder. This makes movements more difficult to perform. A tendinopathy generally has a recognisable course, this helps in making the diagnosis. It is made with the help of the patient's story, physical examination and, if necessary, additional ultrasound or MRI examination. In treatment, the physiotherapist will mainly focus on counselling and restoring the balance between load and load capacity together with the patient.

Cause
Tendinopathy is the official name for a tendon injury. This is an injury caused by reduced quality of tendon tissue. This reduction can occur due to overuse or, on the contrary, underuse, and thus occurs in both young athletic people and the elderly. Other possible causes of a tendon injury are untrained fanatic sports, age, obesity or unsuitable sports equipment.
Complaints and symptoms
The symptoms experienced with tendinopathy are often stiffness, pain and sometimes even swelling. In addition, a crackling/scratching sound may occur with movement. Pain can make it harder to perform movements or exercises. Which movements cause pain also depends on which tendon is affected.
Diagnosis and examination
The diagnosis in a tendinopathy is made by the story the patient tells during the intake that fits with a tendon problem. The physiotherapist can then perform tests to confirm whether there is indeed a tendinopathy. The physiotherapists at Fysiofitaal Tilburg are able to do this. An ultrasound or MRI may also be used to visualise any damage.
Treatments and prognosis
For the treatment of tendon complaints, the physiotherapists FysioFitaal Tilburg are the right place to be! After diagnosis, the physiotherapist will start by giving appropriate advice regarding work, sports and other daily activities. Then, together with the patient, the therapist will engage in restoring the balance between load and load capacity. This is done by using exercise therapy. Going to the physiotherapist once or twice a week is not enough. Besides exercise therapy, homework exercises will be an important part of recovery. In addition, in case of severe complaints, the massage-gun can be used to temporarily dampen pain.
Call
A deltoid tendinopathy often develops gradually and increases in severity over time.
The course of symptoms is often recognisable and goes as follows:
- Complaints at the start of an activity that gradually disappear. This is followed by an after-reaction when the activity is over.
- Complaints at start of activity that gradually disappear but now recur during activity already.
- Complaints that do not go away after the start of an activity and may be present even at rest.
