Physiotherapy after bone fracture or trauma

Physiotherapy and traumatology
A trauma is the medical term for an injury caused by external forces. An example could be injury after an accident with a broken bone that may require surgery. The physiotherapists at Fysio Fitaal are trained to treat complaints after a more extensive or serious accident. The therapists are aware of the various surgical techniques and the corresponding rehabilitation protocols. Fysio Fitaal is a member of the traumatology network in collaboration with the ETZ in Tilburg. Additional consultation with the hospital or surgeon is always possible.
Benefits of physiotherapy after bone fracture
Physiotherapy plays a major role in recovery after a bone fracture. After a fracture, it is important to let the affected area heal, but at the same time prevent surrounding muscles and joints from stiffening and weakening too much. At Fysio Fitaal in Tilburg, we guide you through this process and help rebuild mobility and strength, without the risk of overuse or other injuries.
When a joint or limb has been immobilised for a while, for example by plaster cast or a brace, this can lead to joint stiffness and loss of muscle mass. This makes it difficult to move properly immediately after healing. With targeted exercises, physiotherapy helps reduce this stiffness and gradually regain muscle strength. Attention is also paid to optimal movement patterns so that compensatory behaviour - such as walking crookedly or improperly loading the injury area - is prevented.
Another important aspect of physiotherapy after a bone fracture is preventing complications. Without proper guidance, delayed bone healing may occur or muscles and tendons may shorten, leading to long-term movement restrictions. Starting physiotherapy in a timely and appropriate manner optimises the recovery process and can reduce these risks.
Besides the physical aspect, there is also a mental component. Many people, after a bone fracture, experience fear of straining the affected body part again. This can cause them to move too cautiously, which actually prolongs recovery. We help you regain confidence in your own body and guide you back to an active lifestyle step by step.
Thus, through a well-constructed treatment plan, physiotherapy not only contributes to a faster and more complete recovery, but also ensures that a person returns to their daily activities or sports in a responsible manner.

The first step in the process
After surgery, the treated area is often painful. How soon you can start physiotherapy depends on the type of injury. In some cases, you are still in a plaster cast for several weeks after surgery and it is not yet possible to start physiotherapy. When you do get to start rehabilitation, we want to see you at our practice or possibly at your home as soon as possible. We understand that everything can be a lot to take in, that it is exciting and often unfamiliar. In most cases, you will be given some ground rules from the hospital. We would like to check with you to see if this all works out. Our therapists are aware of the various protocols after surgery. Based on the actuality of the wound area, we take the first steps on the road to recovery.
The next steps in your recovery
A successful rehabilitation consists of several stages and steps. Good strength, stability and control are necessary to be able to function well again in your daily activities.
After surgery, several phases of tissue repair take place. Immediately after occurrence, the inflammatory phase starts. Here, the body sets to work clearing damaged tissue in the affected area and making room for new cells. This phase is often characterised by pain, swelling, blue discolouration, warmth and an inability to bear weight. During this phase, it is important to rest for the most part. The physiotherapist mainly advises on management and expectations of recovery. In addition, some exercises may be given to restore the mobility of the joint.
The inflammation phase takes 7-9 days on average and progresses to the proliferation phase. In this phase, new connective tissue is produced. This tissue is not yet strong enough and cannot be overloaded. During the transition from inflammation phase to proliferation phase, you will notice that complaints such as blue discolouration, pain, etc. decrease. The ability to exercise more also increases.
In the remodelling phase, the newly created connective tissue becomes stronger and more loadable. So, after a few weeks, you need to start putting some more strain in the form of training along with expanding your desired activities.
Fysio Fitaal specialises in this orthopaedic rehabilitation after surgery. Through our cooperation with the various specialists at hospitals and clinics in the region, we offer you the best possible recovery path.
Pre-operative training
At Physio Fitaal, we offer a training programme to prior to surgery. Research shows that the stronger and fitter you go into surgery, the better the results are after surgery. Those who get a start beforehand with an intensive exercise protocol recover faster and are less likely to have complications.
Transport to the practice
The appointment generally takes place at the practice. You may not be able to come to the practice independently. In this case, it is possible for the physiotherapist to come to your home until you are able to come to the practice independently. In some cases, it is possible to use care transport. Ask your own health insurer about this.
