Rowing wrist intersection syndrome

A rower's wrist, also known as intersection syndrome, is particularly common in rowers and sports such as tennis. The cause of these wrist complaints is therefore often overuse of the extensor and flexor muscles of the wrist. Complaints usually include pain when bending and stretching the wrist, warmth and swelling. Physiotherapy can reduce the symptoms through targeted advice and physical treatment.

Causes

Often, a rower's wrist is caused by overuse of the muscles of the wrist, especially the muscles that take care of bending and stretching the wrist. We often see this type of overuse in rowers (hence the name rower's wrist), but also in sports such as tennis and various other sports.

Complaints and symptoms

With a rower's wrist, there is particularly pain in the middle of the upper side of the forearm. The symptoms occur particularly when bending the wrist, but can certainly also be present when stretching the wrist. Because we speak of an overuse injury, the wrist may feel a little warm and slight swelling may be present.

Diagnosis and examination

The therapists at Fysiofitaal Tilburg can diagnose rower's wrist for you. They do this on the basis of an interview (anamnesis) and extensive physical examination. In addition to the general physical examination, the therapist will perform a number of specific tests that will show whether rower's wrist is actually present.

Treatments and prognosis

At Fysiofitaal Tilburg, rower's wrist is treated with the aim of reducing pain and improving both mobility and muscle strength in the wrist region. Therapy consists of personalised advice, exercise therapy and, where necessary, mobilisations or manual therapy. It is important that you engage in homework exercises yourself in addition to visits to your therapist.

Usually, the symptoms occur gradually without a clearly identifiable cause. The symptoms increase over time and may lead to limitations in performing daily actions/activities. Physiotherapy can ensure that your recovery goes as smoothly as possible.
