Morbus de quervain

Morbus de quervain involves inflammation of two tendons of the thumb as well as the tendon sheath. This inflammation is often caused by performing the same movement for long periods of time, leading to strain. Symptoms of morbus de quervain may include pain and swelling on the thumb side of the wrist and/or difficulty moving. The physiotherapists at Fysiofitaal Tilburg can diagnose morbus de quervain, after which treatment will consist of advice, exercise therapy, dry needling and taping/spalming.

Morbus de quervain

Cause

Morbus de quervain involves inflammation of two tendons of the thumb as well as the tendon sheath. This condition involves the extensor pollicis brevis muscle and the abductor pollicis longus muscle. The tendon sheath ensures that the tendons are held in place against the bone. The inside of this tendon sheath is made of a mucous membrane. When this mucous membrane becomes inflamed, the tunnel of the tendon sheath thickens, making it harder for the tendons to move. The friction created also irritates the tendons themselves. This creates even less space in the tunnel. This condition is usually caused by performing the same movements for long periods of time, leading to strain.

Complaints and symptoms

Patients suffering from morbus de quervain experience various symptoms. Consider a burning pain on the thumb side of the wrist. This pain often occurs gradually and increases over time. There may be swelling on the thumb side of the wrist and movement may be difficult and/or painly.

Diagnosis and examination

Morbus de quervain can be diagnosed by the physiotherapists at Fysiofitaal Tilburg. They do this on the basis of an interview (anamnesis) general physical examination and the Finkelstein test.

Treatments and prognosis

Treatment of morbus de quervain at Fysiofitaal Tilburg consists of giving advice, exercise therapy and/or dry needling. In addition, in consultation with the GP it may be decided whether it is useful to administer an injection of anti-inflammatory medication. A splint/taping can also help rest the inflamed structures.
