Cubital tunnel syndrome

Cubital tunnel syndrome involves irritation of the ulnar nerve. The symptoms can occur after a fall but also due to prolonged unilateral strain. The symptoms experienced are similar to bumping the elbow (phone bone), only now they persist instead of disappearing quickly. The physiotherapists at Fysiofitaal Tilburg can diagnose cubital tunnel syndrome and will institute treatment mainly focused on (life) advice.

Cause

In cubital tunnel syndrome, the ulnar nerve (nerve running on the inside of the elbow) is irritated. The nerve runs through a tunnel on the back-inside of the elbow. This tunnel consists of the bone of the elbow and a ligament. Cubital tunnel syndrome can occur after a fall or other accident. Another cause is repeated application of pressure on the elbow by, for example, leaning on a table. Cubital tunnel syndrome is also frequently seen in people who bend the elbow a lot. Such as in people who play a musical instrument, do office work or actually work in construction.

Complaints and symptoms

The symptoms that occur with cubital tunnel syndrome are similar to when you bump your elbow. You feel a kind of electric shock going to the fingers (the phonetic bone). So there is tingling and pain on the inside of the forearm and the little finger. Feeling in that area may also change and full flexion of the elbow may cause the complaints worsen.

Diagnosis and examination

Cubital tunnel syndrome can be diagnosed by the physiotherapists at Fysiofitaal Tilburg. We do this by conducting an interview (anamnesis), physical examination and specific tests to stretch the ulnar nerve. This allows us to determine whether this nerve is causing complaints.

Treatments and prognosis

The treatment of cubital tunnel syndrome at Fysiofitaal Tilburg will be shaped by advice on how to deal with the symptoms and how to continue carrying out your daily activities as well as possible.
